LG to launch sunlight Illuminated LCD laptop at CES 2009

True, it's a 14.1 inch LG notebook rather than a netbook (hey three buzzwords would rule) but it's supposed to reduce power consumption by 75% with integral panels that can switch from reflective mode (outdoors) to transmissive (indoors and night). A touch of a button lets you adjust this easily, so there's no faffing around with complicated menus.

This makes it more energy efficient as well as addressing visibility issues such as the sun reflecting off the screen., They've given it a contrast ratio of 9:1 so it should be 100% viewable in reflective mode. Not only does this mean battery life will last longer, but you should also save on your electric bill. We can look forward to seeing this at CES so watch this space for a video.

LG confirms 2009 launch for 3G wristphone

Watches that let you make voice and video calls sound like something from a James Bond movie. Or an LG catalogue. The Korean electronics giant has a wristwatch phone in the works and yesterday confirmed it is launching the high-tech timepiece at some unspecified time this year

Woo Paik, LG's chief technology officer, made the launch announcement as he demonstrated the GD910 wristwatch phone at CES this week. The wrist-set will provide two hours of talk time from a single charge, but it’s unclear if this refers to voice or video use.

An integrated camera on the watch lets the wearer make video calls over a 3G connection. The device is less than 1in thick and weighs just 84g. The 1.4in screen is touch sensitive , which means that three physical buttons are built into the watch.

Audio playback is also possible, but we hope LG puts in a decent amount of on-board storage, or at least equip it with a Micro SD card slot.

Other features include MP3 playback, Bluetooth, text-to-speech commands and a speaker phone.

Apple iPhone twin: LG Voyager

Verizon Wireless is launching a cell phone that looks a lot like this year's hottest new product: the iPhone.

Verizon's LG Voyager phone features a touch screen, a camera and extensive multimedia, Web browsing and e-mail capabilities.

However, it one-ups the iPhone by folding open lengthwise to reveal a QWERTY keyboard and a second, nontouch-sensitive screen. The lack of a hardware keyboard has been a top complaint about the iPhone.

In an announcement set for today launching its holiday lineup, Verizon didn't say how much the Voyager or three other new phones would cost. It also didn't give a specific launch date, saying only they'd be in stores before Thanksgiving.

The Voyager will connect to Verizon's latest data network - providing speeds much faster than the AT&T network used by the iPhone. The Voyager also has direct access to Verizon's online music store.

However, the Voyager will not come with large built-in memory for songs and video, offering instead a slot for memory cards up to 8 gigabytes. Nor are its screens as large as the iPhone's.

Since hitting the market June 29, Apple has sold more than 1 million units

Latest LG Electronics The 200Hz LCD Full HD Televisions

Technology is changing rapidly, and more and more innovative products are spawned every year by various manufacturers. LG Electronics has already announced their latest models, and LH50 is one among the 2009 LCD line-ups. LG has unveiled their 200Hz Trumotion display with In Plane Switching Panel to augment the picture quality considerably. IPS Alpha Panels are already popular in the display market with its amazing capability for reproducing exact replicas of the input video signals. Many leading display makers like Panasonic are already using IPS alpha panels to obtain improved picture quality and high efficiency.

LG has flaunted their 2009 display models in a product launch in Melbourne lately, and LH-50 LCD television Series that comes with Super IPS panel and stunningly high refresh rate of 200Hz was the centerpiece among them. LG boasts about the picture clarity and the faster response time provided by S-IPS Panel which inturn helps to maintain good colour and contrast even at off-axis viewing angle. IPS Alpha panels are renown for the luxurious viewability provided. S-IPS panel helps to render more vibrant and vivid motion images and also rectifies the colour wash to a great extent. This results in crystal clear pictures with razor sharp frames.

Refresh rate is always a pivotal factor that steers the display to render captivating images. The higher the refresh rate, the better the images are. Conventional displays used 50Hz refresh rate, and later 100Hz refresh rate was introduced to offer better pics. Now LG has introduced 200Hz refresh rate to offer fresh and vibrant images with wider colour gamut and extensive tonal range. Moreover high refresh rates assures improved motion picture reproduction by eliminating the motion blur largely. Even the fastest motion images are rendered without any judders or flickers to ensure high performance.

LG LH50 LCD Televisions use LED backlight settings to offer pristine images. Moreover LG has incorporated direct lit LED backlight system in this television to offer more virginal images that may stir your senses. Smoother motions, wicked black levels and exceptional colour tones are the outcome of this sophisticated backlight system. It is generally told that direct lit LED backlight settings may hinder using the minimalist approach in design; but LG has manged to blend slim panel concept and direct lit LED backlight setting efficiently.

Unlike most of the 200Hz LCD television, LG has not incorporated Motion Estimation Motion Compensation(MEMC) in LH50 LCD televisions. It is a process used by most of the manufacturers to accomplish 200Hz refresh rate, which can produce image damages. The anticipated release date of LG LH50 LCD HDTV is April 2009, and it is available in five different screen sizes like 32”, 37”, 42”. 47” and 55”. However the price estimates of this television is not as attractive as the television’s features!!

mobile LG KM501

We would have considered this another run-of-the-mill music-oriented device were it not for its 3.5-mm headphone jack, a trump card that most other musicphones do not possess. And its capability to play up to 29 hours of your favorite tracks.

Other than these two major factors, the LG KM501 falls into the low to mid-range criteria with a 2-inch 240×320 display, a 2-megapixel camera, and 42MB of internal memory with support for up to 4GB expansion by way of microSD. Of course, to live up to its musicphone status, the KM501 has dedicated music keys, equalizer settings, and a handy background mode, not to forget the FM radio.

The KM501 is available only in Taiwan as of now, with no info on pricing yet.

LG’s Dare would really like to be an iPhone

Verizon today began shipping the LG Dare, and has finally revealed the price of the new device. The handset should be available for purchase online by Thursday, and will hit retail stores on July 3rd.

The phone will retail for $250. You then get a $50 mail-in-rebate…which will bring the cost down to $200 when you eventually get your rebate check in the mail.

The Dare is smaller than the iPhone (and is missing the iPhone’s built in storage), but it does have some features that the iPhone itself lacks. For example, it has a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash. It also has a 120 frames per second video capture mode, and a microSD slot which allows for memory expansion.

It does feature a “full HTML browser”, 3G (through EVDO Revision A) and GPS through Verizon’s Navigator.

None of that, however, changes the fact that if you buy one of these you’ll be walking around with a device that looks like a knock-off of the iPhone.

Obviously there is plenty that the LG DOESN’T have that the iPhone will - including the App Store, and multi-touch - but honestly, why would anyone want to run around with something that looks like this?

I mean, seriously, if you don’t want an iPhone why on earth would you want a phone that LOOKS like an iPhone? If you do want an iPhone, and you’re waiting for your contract to come up - why would you want this knock-off looking phone when you can just wait out your contract?

These kinds of phones are SAD as far as I’m concerned. I am not near fanboy enough to suggest that Apple is the only one that knows how to make a good phone. The lack of original thinking on the part of these other phone designers is just appalling, though.

You can make a touch screen phone that doesn’t look completely like a knock off of the iPhone. I know its possible…someone please at least TRY.

Update: Since this article is getting so much traffic let me clarify a few things.

The LG Dare is a reworked LG Prada, which is a touch screen phone that came out shortly before the iPhone. If you look at the original Prada, its design is quite different from the Dare. For one, it has original and unique icons, that don’t look like they are copied from Mac OS X. The design of the Prada doesn’t look quite as influenced by the iPhone either (which should be obvious, since it would have been impossible for the Prada to have been influenced by the iPhone…because the Prada came first).

This is my entire point. The LG Dare has been made to look like the iPhone. They already had a great looking, original, phone in the Prada, and LG decided it was a better idea to make the Dare look like a cheap iPhone knock-off..when it ISN’T an iPhone knock-off.

It is sad and depressing to me to think that the cellphone industry is just going to tuck tail and start making their phones look and feel like the more popular iPhone. It would be better for everyone involved, including Apple, if they would try to do their own thing, instead of going to such great lengths to imitate the iPhone.

LG punches a hole in one slim LCD

In one of the more distinctive styling decisions we've seen at this year's CES, LG is offering an ultrathin LCD with round hole right in the frame. The 42LGX Super Slim also, as the name implies, measures just 1.7 inches thick, besting the 2007 champ, Sharp's 3.5-inch thick LC-D64U series, by a solid 1.8 inches. If the hole and the thinness don't appeal to you, maybe this model's red backside will.

The 42LGX Super Slim also offers 120Hz technology and a host of other improvements, including an ISF mode that has a user-accessible color temperature adjustment with 10 separate grayscale points, which should help calibrators improve color accuracy. That's cool, but we care more about playing Valve's (thanks, Mellowie!) Portal on this thing and snickering every time we catch a reference to "Aperture Science."

As usual, LG did not announce pricing or availability on the 42LGX Super Slim.

42LGX Super Slim key features (direct from the press release)
TruMotion 120Hz technology
Invisible Speaker System
Intelligent Sensor for automatic optimization of brightness and color
24p TruCinema
ISFccc Calibration Ready
Four HDMI with 1.3 Deep Color
